چکیده

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of aging in either air or nitrogen on the residual interlaminar strains and stresses in unidirectional and woven graphite/polyimide composites. In order to accomplish this goal, XRD measurements have been made on embedded aluminum inclusions placed between the first and second plies of both unidirectional and fabric graphite /PMR-15 composite specimens subjected to aging in either air or nitrogen at 315°C for up to 1024 hours. The interlaminar residual stresses in the composites were subsequently numerically extracted from the XRD strains in the embedded inclusions using an approach based on the Eshelby/Mori-Tanaka model. It has been shown in this work that the aging of the composites in air affects the strains and stresses in the inclusions as well as the residual stresses in the composites. The effect of aging in nitrogen on the strains in the inclusions was found to be significantly less pronounced.

Measurement of Residual Stresses in Fiber Reinforced Composites Based on X-Ray Diffraction

1. ABSTRACT X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements have been made to determine residual stresses in embedded Al particles placed between the first and second ply of both unidirectional and fabric graphite/PMR-15 composite specimens. In order to further verify the results obtained, the effect of externally applied four-point bending on the measured strains and stresses in the Al inclusions was inv...

Influence of Residual Stress on Fatigue Life of Hot Forged and Shot Blasted Steel Components

Hot forging is a common manufacturing process for the production of large quantities of engineering components. Residual stresses are developed in forged components as a result of various aspects of the manufacturing process, including subsequent cooling, and heat treatment. Residual stresses can significantly affect the deformation and fatigue failure of materials. Hot forged EN15R steel bars ...

Accelerated Heat Aging Study of Phenolic/Basalt Fiber Reinforced Composites

One of the greatest impediments to use polymer-matrix composites is their susceptibility to degradation when exposed to the elevated temperatures and the limited knowledge on the thermal and mechanical properties of these composites at such temperatures. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of accelerated heat aging on the tensile properties of the Woven Basalt/Phenolic (WBP) ...

X-Ray Diffraction Evaluation of Adhesive Bonds and Damage in Composites

Stresses can be measured by X-ray diffraction, not only in metals but also in polymeric composites containing some crystalline filler particles. Diffraction is found effective in disclosing the distribution of stresses over the surface of adhesively bonded joints in aluminum strips when loads well below the yield point are applied. When two 606l-T6 aluminum strips 1/16" or l/32" thick and 3/4" ...

Effect of Silicon Carbide and graphite additives on the pressureless Sintering mechanism and microstructural characteristics of Ultra-High Temperature ZrB2 Ceramics Composites

The effect of SiC content, additives, and process parameters on densification and microstructural properties of pressureless sintered ZrB2– (1–10 wt %) SiC particulate composites have been studied. The ZrB2–SiC composite powders mixed by Spex mixer with 1-2wt% C (added as graphite powder) and CMC have been cold-compacted and sintered in argon environment in the temperature range of 1800–2100ºC ...
